LEARNING CODE

“Today we’ll be learning Generative Art, where we’ll be using code to create art,” Ms. Lenters announced.

Immediately, the room was abuzz. Lots of us were excited at this new concept. “Learning code empowers students, and gives them tools to express themselves in really cool ways,” Ms. Lenters said, and talked more about why teaching students like us code was so important. Then, we got started!

We used a website called Open Processing to learn code. First, we started relatively simple, by learning how to set up the size of the canvas and to create a rectangle and a circle using code. Then, we progressed to more complicated things, like how to add color, or how to make the image more interactive. After that, we used the skills we learned to overcome a challenge: creating a character using only circles and rectangles. The resulting characters were all so creative and cool!

For me, I like to do coding at home now, just for the fun of experimenting and trying new things, to see what I can come up with. I think everyone should be given the chance to learn coding, as it is really fun, and if you do it, you’ll develop a lot of great skills. Coding is a doorway to all things impossible.
