Boys Basketball Team Wins the Pennant!

The Blazers basketball team (boys) went to Heritage Christian School on Saturday, February 28. We had a great day!  The first game was against Jarvis.  Early in the game we were able to get a big lead.  After winning our first match our team was in a good mood.  Our next game was against Beacon.  This game took our team a bit by surprise because Beacon had some fast players and they played really aggressive.  But our team adjusted.  We worked together and we were able to still win the match.  After that game we worried because one of our players had to leave the tournament and our next match was against the home team Heritage A (the grade 8 team).  Heritage was a tall team, taller than our players, and going in we knew it would be a tough match.  During the match we realized they were playing quite rough.  The referee wasn't calling a lot of the fouls.  We ended up winning, even though it was a tough match against a tough team and we were a player short.  Winning all three games meant we were in the semi finals.  We then faced John Knox in the semi finals. I myself underestimated them, they were a strong team.  It was a close match, but again we pulled together and won.  We were in the finals!  We were up against Smithville.  They were the first team we faced that played zone defense. (That is when a team stays in a certain position, instead of guarding a person keeping them out of the key).  It was a tough match.  When there was less than 30 seconds left we were down three points.  One of our players went for a three point shot.  It went in!  Our team cheered!  The score was tied and time ran out.  Since it was the finals, they couldn’t leave it as a tie. The officials added four minutes to the clock but when time ran out the score was still tied. Another four minutes of overtime was added to the clock.  This time we managed to get a lead of four points.   But Smithville also scored another basket.  Time was running out and we had a slim two point lead. So we started to stall with the ball.  They charged the ball and we had to start speeding up the passing.  We were able to stall and play hard defense and we won the pennant! I had a fun day and so did the team.  Thanks to Mr. Boonstra and Mr. Brouwer for coaching and to my amazing teammates.  We couldn’t have done it without the help of everyone!
