Richard (Rick) Greidanus.

Richard (Rick) Greidanus.

On Sunday, Nov. 2, the Calvin Christian School community was saddened to learn of the death of Rick Greidanus, husband of our grade 7 teacher, Joanne Greidanus. Rick was in his 57th year and a picture of good health. He died while doing what he enjoyed, running for a special cause. Rick collapsed near the end of the Road2Hope Marathon. This marathon was organized to help raise money for needy children. By running in the Road2Hope Marathon, Rick provided a Christian service.

Rick is remembered at Calvin Christian School for his volunteer work. He took on the intense task of tabulating all the individual and team scores at the CCS track and field day. He punched out the numbers all day long and by 3:20 p.m. he was able to provide a print-out showing all the scores and lots of extra data. He will be missed at our track and field days. Rick also delighted in helping out our cross country team. Given his love for running, this comes as no surprise. Rick is also remembered for his role on the Management Team. This team oversaw the construction of our new school building. Rick managed all the data. He tracked and projected costs; he analyzed everything from fibre optics to carpets. We relied very strongly on his data. His database skills were immense and his contributions were priceless.

Finally, Rick is remembered for his words of encouragement. He was naturally interested in the wellbeing of Calvin Christian School. He asked questions and provided kind words of encouragement and support. There was a calm, inner strength about him that was reassuring. And no doubt, his dear wife, Joanne, experienced that as well. May the Lord be especially near to Joanne, their daughter Aerin.

The Bible text the family has chosen is from 1 Cor 9:24

"You know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize.
