Every year 4 students from each grade level at CCS are blessed with the opportunity to participate in the CCS Spelling Bee. I also had the privilege of participating in this splendid event.

For this affair, all the students that are participating head down at the time selected for their age group and receive some information on the competition that they are about to participate in. They then pick a number that is upside down on a table to see what order they will take turns spelling their words.

Of course, nobody wants to go first. A grade seven student said, “No one wants to go first, because, that’s when the nerves really start to kick in, and it’s reassuring when the person in front of you gets the word right, then you feel like you can do it.” Once who goes first is determined, the competition begins.

The words in the Spelling Bee competition range from therapeutics, to tuberculosis, to hullabaloo. The competition NEVER gets boring. When it is all said and done, the top 3 spellers move on to the Niagara District Spelling Bee, taking place on December 1, 2017.

The CCS Spelling Bee never has a dull moment. Congratulations to all who participated, and we hope to see you again next year.
